Part 1 — The Experiment
Sometime in the mid-1960s, in a laboratory in Bordeaux, France, a group of rats has been grafted with T-8 tumours. This is an aggressive and reliably lethal experimental cancer. The rats are divided into two groups. The control group receives no treatment. The experimental group is exposed to the emissions from a machine built by an Italian-born electrical engineer named Antoine Priore.
Within weeks, every rat in the control group is dead.
The treated group is still alive. And over the following weeks, their tumours begin to regress.
The researchers recording these results are not working on the margins of science. They are based at the University of Bordeaux, collaborating with the French National Centre for Scientific Research, known as the CNRS, one of the most prestigious research institutions in Europe. Their findings are reviewed, questioned, and repeated. They hold up. In 1965, a note reporting the results is sent to the French Academy of Sciences [1].
This is where the Priore story is different from almost every other article in this series. It did not happen in isolation, witnessed only by a handful of observers who could later be dismissed. It happened inside the French scientific establishment. And it remained there, documented and contested and ultimately unresolved, for nearly a decade.
What made the Priore affair so difficult to ignore, and so difficult to accept, was not a single dramatic demonstration. It was a decade of documented animal experiments, reviewed by serious scientists, funded by a national government, published in peer-reviewed journals, and never explained to anyone's complete satisfaction.
Part 2 — Who Was Antoine Priore?
Antoine Priore was born in Trieste, Italy, on 10 April 1912. He trained in electrical engineering and served as a radar technician for the Italian Navy. His path to France was not straightforward. He was a prisoner of the German Nazi occupation of Bordeaux during the Second World War, and was rescued in 1944 by Louis Durand, a police captain and member of the French Resistance [2]. That rescue was not incidental to the story. It established a connection between Priore and the French Resistance network at a formative moment, a connection that would later matter when he needed political allies for his research.
After the war, Priore settled in Bordeaux and worked there for twenty-five years. His radar background is significant because radar in the 1940s was frontier technology. It required practical mastery of high-voltage circuits, microwave generators, magnetron oscillators, vacuum tube electronics, and the manipulation of electromagnetic fields in ways that civilian engineering had barely begun to explore. Priore’s technical formation was, in the context of his time, genuinely sophisticated.
His path into biomedical research began accidentally. He noticed that certain foods stored near his electronic equipment remained fresh far longer than they should have. Fruits and vegetables that should have deteriorated did not. He began systematically exposing biological materials to the emissions from his devices, and eventually, in the late 1950s, began working with laboratory animals and tumour models [3].
He was not a biologist, a physician, or an academically credentialled scientist. He had no formal training in oncology or immunology. In a different era or a different country, that would likely have meant his findings were never taken seriously at all. But France in the 1960s had a particular openness shaped partly by the legacy of the Resistance, which had created networks of trust between people from unconventional backgrounds. And Priore had cultivated a specific political relationship in Bordeaux that would prove decisive. Jacques Chaban-Delmas, the city’s mayor and future Prime Minister of France, was himself a Resistance leader who was persuaded by Priore’s early results to invest political capital in supporting the research [2].
Part 3 — The Machine: What It Actually Was
Priore’s device went through several iterations over the course of his research. The basic architecture remained consistent across all versions: a large plasma tube containing mercury and neon gas was driven by a combination of electromagnetic signals at multiple frequencies, operating within a strong static magnetic field.
The best-documented version of the device was technically specific. A magnetron oscillator operating at 9.4 gigahertz, pulsing at 40 kilowatts of peak power for one microsecond at a rate of one kilohertz, provided the primary microwave carrier signal. Two high-frequency oscillators, running at approximately 17.6 MHz and 15.8 MHz, provided the modulating signals. These three signals were mixed inside the plasma tube, so that the pulsed 9.4 GHz microwave signal was modulated by the two high-frequency oscillators. The entire assembly operated within a static magnetic field ranging from approximately 600 to 1,200 gauss depending on the device version, which both confined the plasma and was itself pulsed at 50 times per minute [4].
The result was a rotating plasma producing a complex mixture of electromagnetic radiation: microwave, radio-frequency, and magnetic field components interacting simultaneously. The plasma tube glowed during operation, emitting a characteristic violet colour that was one of its most visually distinctive features.
What made the machine genuinely frustrating to evaluate scientifically was this: Priore could build it, tune it, and operate it. The animal results it produced were documented and reviewed. But he never fully disclosed how the device worked or which component of its complex output was responsible for the biological effects. Whether he himself fully understood the mechanism is, according to those who knew him and the historical record, genuinely unclear [3]. He kept the technical details close, fearing that others would appropriate his invention without crediting him. That was an understandable instinct for someone without institutional protection, but it made independent replication essentially impossible.
His final large device, the M-600, was designed specifically for human-scale treatment and large enough to irradiate an entire human body rather than a small animal. It was never completed before funding ended and Priore’s health declined. The machine that had produced the documented animal results never made the transition to human clinical application.
Part 4 — When the French Establishment Got Involved
What separates the Priore case from Moray, from Tesla at Wardenclyffe, and from most other figures in the scalar and electromedicine lineage is what happened next: the French scientific establishment took the work seriously enough to fund it, study it, and publish about it for nearly a decade.
The key scientific figure was Professor Raymond Pautrizel, France’s leading professor of immunology and parasitology at the University of Bordeaux. Pautrizel began collaborating with Priore in the early 1960s and spent years conducting and overseeing the animal experiments. He was a rigorous scientist with an established research record, and he designed the experiments with the controls and documentation standards his field required. Pautrizel’s interpretation of the mechanism was immunological. His position was that Priore’s device was stimulating and enhancing the immune system of treated animals, allowing them to overcome diseases that would otherwise be lethal [1].
The results that Pautrizel and his colleagues produced were published in peer-reviewed French journals between 1965 and 1974. The studies examined effects not only on grafted tumours but on parasitic diseases, particularly trypanosomiasis, where the results were, if anything, even more striking. Priore’s doctoral thesis, submitted to the University of Bordeaux in 1973, documented complete cures of experimental trypanosomiasis using his device [5].
Robert Courrier, Permanent Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences and head of its Biology Section, personally presented Priore’s results to the Academy. Among those who engaged seriously with the work was Andre Lwoff, the 1965 Nobel Prize laureate in Medicine and Physiology [2]. The World Health Organisation expressed interest. The French government provided millions of francs in funding under the direct patronage of Prime Minister Chaban-Delmas. The Mayor of Bordeaux laid the ceremonial cornerstone for a new Priore laboratory, a public ceremony attended by university officials, CNRS researchers, and members of the National Assembly.
For a period in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Priore research programme was not a fringe curiosity. It was a funded, institutionally supported, politically connected scientific project at the heart of the French research establishment. That is a crucial fact to hold, because what happened next is all the more striking for it.
Part 5 — Why It Ended
The Priore research programme effectively ended in 1974. The reasons were multiple and overlapping. Honest assessment requires acknowledging all of them rather than settling on a single narrative.
The most fundamental scientific problem was mechanism. The French Academy’s commissions that reviewed Priore’s results did not deny that the animal experiments had produced the documented effects. What they could not accept, and what Priore himself could not provide, was an explanation of how. Which component of the complex electromagnetic output was responsible? What was happening at the cellular or molecular level? Without a mechanism, the findings could not be integrated into existing scientific frameworks, could not be taught, and could not be built upon. Without the ability to build upon them, the investment case for continued funding eroded [2].
There were also specific controversies that damaged the programme’s credibility at critical moments. In 1965, mice with experimental cancers arrived at Priore’s laboratory from the Chester Beatty Cancer Research Institute in England. After treatment, the mice were returned to the Institute. Scientists there found that the returned mice were rejecting new cancer grafts, which they interpreted as evidence that the returned animals were not the same mice that had been sent. One researcher, Pierette Chateaurenaud-Duprat, offered a different interpretation: the mice showed signs of immunity to the cancers they had originally been grafted with, which was exactly what Pautrizel’s immunological model would predict [2]. The controversy was never fully resolved and left a lasting shadow over the programme.
Priore’s secrecy about technical details created additional friction. His reluctance to allow independent inspection of the device’s components and to disclose the full mechanism made verification nearly impossible. And verification is what science requires [3].
By the mid-1970s, Chaban-Delmas was no longer Prime Minister, and the political patronage that had sustained the project was withdrawn. Priore’s health was declining. The M-600, which he believed would have settled the question by treating human patients at whole-body scale, was never completed. Antoine Priore died in Bordeaux on 9 May 1983 of a stroke, without the vindication he believed the results justified, and without the definitive human clinical data that might have permanently changed the scientific conversation.
Part 6 — What It Left Behind
The Priore affair did not end cleanly. The published peer-reviewed results remain in the scientific literature. They have not been retracted. They have not been explained by conventional bioelectromagnetics. They have not been independently replicated, but neither has anyone published a controlled study demonstrating that equivalent experimental conditions produce null results. The most accurate statement about the Priore research today is this: it produced documented findings in animal models that have never been satisfactorily accounted for by conventional science, and have never been reproduced at the level that would compel mainstream acceptance.
The most systematic attempt to provide a theoretical framework for what Priore’s device might have been doing came from Thomas E. Bearden, the American physicist and scalar energy theorist whose work we have referenced throughout this series. Bearden argued that Priore’s machine was generating, perhaps without Priore’s own understanding of it, phase-conjugate waves: time-reversed electromagnetic signals that could interact with biological systems in fundamentally different ways from ordinary electromagnetic radiation [6].
The physics of this interpretation rests on real phenomena. A plasma can convert a transverse electromagnetic wave into a longitudinal wave. A plasma can also produce phase-conjugate, time-reversed wave components. These are not invented properties. They are documented behaviours of ionised gas media in nonlinear electromagnetic conditions. What Bearden proposed was that the specific combination of microwave carrier, high-frequency modulating signals, and strong pulsed magnetic field in Priore’s plasma tube was producing a complex scalar electromagnetic signal with phase-conjugate components. In his model, these components were interacting with the cellular control systems of living organisms in ways that pushed diseased cells back toward normal function [6].
Whether Bearden’s interpretation is correct is not established. His theoretical framework extends significantly beyond what mainstream physics currently accepts. But the starting point, that a plasma under complex electromagnetic excitation can produce unusual wave components including longitudinal and phase-conjugate waves, is not fabricated. It is the physical basis that makes the Priore situation something other than simple fraud or delusion.
In the context of this series, Priore belongs in the same experimental research line as Tesla and Moray: a complex electromagnetic device producing effects in the biological world that observers, including credentialled scientists and in Priore’s case a Nobel laureate, could not explain within existing models. In all three cases, the inventor could not or would not fully disclose the mechanism. In all three cases, independent replication was never achieved to mainstream scientific standards. In all three cases, the work ended without resolution.
The Priore case is arguably the most significant of the three for a single reason: the institutional validation it received before it ended was substantially greater than anything Tesla or Moray achieved. The French Academy of Sciences, the CNRS, a Nobel Prize winner in medicine, the Prime Minister’s office, the World Health Organisation. These are not peripheral institutions. The fact that work received at that level still ended without resolution is not a minor footnote. It is the central and enduring puzzle of the Priore affair.
Antoine Priore did not prove that electromagnetic fields can cure cancer. But the experiments he conducted, reviewed by serious scientists, supported by a Nobel laureate, funded by a national government, and published in peer-reviewed journals, produced results that conventional science has never satisfactorily explained. That is not a small thing. It is the kind of unresolved anomaly that the history of science suggests deserves continued investigation, conducted with rigour and honesty, and without the premature certainty of either dismissal or belief.
